The First Paper, the First Ticket Out
It started with nothing special
Honestly, back when I first poked at research, I never thought I’d have a paper. I just saw the seniors in the lab doing cool stuff and got curious whether I could do any of it. So I started reading papers, writing code, and fixing bugs until midnight. Sounds dramatic, but the truth is 80% of the time I was staring at a terminal and swearing under my breath.
The email I read over and over
When the accept email landed, I didn’t scream. I read it over and over, scared I was misreading the word “Accepted”. Like: surely they mixed me up, or it’s spam? It only felt real when I saw my own name in there. All those late nights, the revisions after review, the moments I wanted to quit — suddenly worth it.
The ticket that took me out
Then came the first plane ticket of my life. First time going abroad, not for a holiday, but to present my own paper. Sitting by the window on that flight, I realized the years of fumbling had finally become something. You can’t buy that feeling anywhere.
To wrap it up
The first paper isn’t the destination. It’s a marker: keep working, and the things that seem far away are closer than you think. And that ticket? I still keep it. It reminds me that I once stood at a crossroads and chose to keep walking.
